The Master of Public Health Programme (MPH)

At NHV you can obtain a Master of Public Health (MPH) within the frame of a complete programme, the MPH programme.

About the programme

The MPH programme comprises 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), corresponding to two years of full-time study. The compulsory courses consist of 32 ECTS and the elective courses 58 ECTS. The thesis corresponds to 30 ECTS. Only a part of the programme is offered in English.

The compulsory courses are given within general areas of Public Health at advanced level, and can also be taken at other Nordic institutions providing education within the field of Public Health.

The following areas are compulsory:

  • Public Health Science, 7 ECTS
  • Epidemiology, 5 ECTS
  • Health Promotion, 5 ECTS
  • Health Management, 5 ECTS
  • Qualitative Methodology, 5 ECTS
  • Quantitative Methodology, 5 ECTS

Students admitted to the programme are also entitled to help from a supervisor in connection with working on their MPH thesis.

Entry Requirements

You need to fulfil both the general entry requirement as well as the specific entry requirement to be qualified for the MPH programme. The general entry reqirement is a higher-education degree equivalent to three years of full-time study at university level. You fulfil the specific entry requirement when you have completed courses equalling at least 15 ECTS at NHV or by NHV granted advanced level courses at other institutions within one/some of the compulsory areas.

Application and admission

The next application period for the MPH programme is open from August 15 until September 30 in 2012. The application form will be available on this web site during the application period. Each year, 20 students will be admitted to the programme in accordance with Nordic quotas.

A certificate of examination for general entry requirement must be enclosed when applying to the programme. For courses not taken at NHV, you must also enclose a syllabus as well as grades, certificates or other types of documentation that verify the specific entry requirements. Send all certificates to the MPH secretary by e-mail or mail. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

If there are more applicants than places available from the Nordic countries, Nordic applicants will be ranked according to the following two principles:

  • Public Health Education
Credit will only be given for courses, on at least advanced level, within the compulsory areas (see above).
  • Academic merits

You must apply separately to all courses you wish to attend. As admitted to the programme you have priority to NHV’s courses, but no guaranteed place. Read more about our current course programme

Citizens outside the Nordic countries may be accepted to the programme if there are places and a suitable supervisor available at NHV and after individual  assessment of qualifications and language skills. Please note, however, that only a few of the courses at NHV are offered in English. Knowledge in Scandinavian languages or the possibility to take courses at other institutions and subsequently have them credited (see text below) is therefore mandatory for being able to complete the programme.

Course credits earned at other institutions

Courses at advanced level within the field of public health from other institutions may be credited within the MPH programme, provided that the courses have not been included in another exam or degree. Read more about how to apply for credit transfer
